Mumbai-13-11-2020: A Mumbai based advocate has sought Attorney General KK Veenugopal’s permission to initiate contempt proceedings against Kunal Kamra (Stand-up comedian and youtuber) for his comment on twitter mocking the Supreme Court decision of the granting bail to Journalist Arnab Goswami. Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee has mentioned that the comment of Kunal Kamra on twitter about the Apex Court decision was very contemptuous for their allegedly “salacious and unruly” nature.
Two more lawyers from Pune has also sought the Attorney General KK Veenugopal’s permission to initiate contempt proceedings. KK Veenugopal quotes that “It is time that people understand attacking the Supreme Court unjustifiably and brazenly will lead to punishment” Veenugopal also added that the comedians tweets crossed the lines between humor and contempt. Attorney General KK Veenugopal further adds that “The tweet is a gross insinuation against the entirety of the Supreme Court of India and its judges,”
The lawyers appealing for contempt proceedings against Kunal Karmra mentiones that “Today people boldly and brazenly condemn the Supreme Court and its judges in what they believe is freedom of speech”. The lawyers also added that Kunal Kamra has added multiple tweets against the Supreme Court decision on the bail of Arnab Goswami and that is not acceptable.
